Elections Canada found Candice Bergen in Breach of the Elections Act in Portage—Lisgar By-Election
Commissioner has determined that a breach of the Act has occurred. She will deal with it informally, so say sorry to herself?
A by-election was held in the federal riding of Portage—Lisgar in Manitoba on June 19, 2023, following the resignation of Conservative MP Candice Bergen.
Candice Bergen posted a picture of her voting for the Conservative Party of Canada candidate Leslie “Let’s Go” Branden. I always thought when Branden posted that on his launch he was mocking the electorate, but only he knows if that is true.

We submitted a violation to Election Canada and their conclusion, which we received today is that there was a breach:
“After having examined the information provided in your correspondence, and following a review of the matter, the Commissioner has determined that a breach of the Act has occurred in this case. An evaluation of the specific circumstances and consideration of the factors outlined in section 32 of our Compliance and Enforcement Policy have led her to conclude that the matter would be best addressed informally.”
Situations that are addressed using informal means carry with them the expectation that the person will, in the future, act in accordance with the requirements of the Act. They form part of the person’s compliance record such that any future non-compliance is more likely to be addressed using stricter formal means.
Our Office relies on Canadians to let us know when they think something is wrong. By bringing this matter to our attention, you have contributed to the integrity of the electoral system and to safeguarding Canadians’ trust in their democratic process. We sincerely thank you for that.”

So was this a dishonest tactic of a party worried about losing that seat to Peoples Party of Canada leader Maxime Bernier? The previous MP and the ex-intern leader of the party posting who she voted for would affect the election. I believe she knew it was wrong but were they so desperate that it didn’t matter or did they know that those rules didn’t apply to them so they did anyway.
What we’ve learned is that the rules mean nothing and it’s beneficial to break them. They want you to believe in their Illusion of Choice. At the end of the day, nothing changes. Bergen gets some kind of election strike and who knows how many strikes are allowed.
We get to see more evidence that the system is corrupt. The establishment parties have different rules because ultimately they’re all on the same team. Illusion of Choice!
